Project U92




Edit002 :

Oh yes, I just remembered, what is going to take up most of our time will be, modelling, texturing, and rigging.

After trying to take a short nap, which I couldn't as all these are flying around in my head, I noticed that we have to model :

- Tanks
- Military Trucks
- Industrial Lorries / Trucks
- Helicopter(s)

And we have to texture and rig them as well. =)

Post your thoughts or save them till the next meeting when we continue discussing the story.

And also for the theme, we need to try out whether or not realistic textures will work with cartoony figures like our characters. If not we may have to try for another approach.

Just a heads up.


Edit :

Next week during our group meeting, we'll 'restructure' the story ourselves, so when next Saturday comes, we'll have a few drafts to show that we already made the effort. Then on at least we know what we want, and if anyone plans to bomb us, at least we'll have our say as well.

We also have to discuss on the time limit of 3 minutes for our animatics, but before we can do that, we have to wait until next week when we start on storyboarding.



Story

We still have to work / refine / restructure the story, we might do this in the upcoming meeting. If you heard Aik Sern, he gave a pretty good suggestion today.

Amir has confirmed with Aik Sern that our "animatics" has to be withing 3 minutes, it is stated in black and white thanks to Seamus. Anything exceeding that, we will fail. Read the sentence closely, 'animatics'.

Project U92



Story

We've added more details into the story, more or less came up with how U92 will die.



Concept Art

Breakdown of what we know and discussed :

Denver The Veteran
- References will be TF2's Soldier body proportion
- Facial will be Rourke the main villain in Atlantis.
- The facial we are aiming for a broad chin, but not too broad or he'll turn up looking dumb.

U92
- References will be L4D's Tank monster.
- Jaw hanging?
- His head will be tiny.

President Jones
- References will be Bolt's main villain Dr. Calico.
- Our aim is that our president is skinny, but will an exaggerated V shape.
- Facial will look somewhat cunning, a long and sharp chin is what I have in mind. But others may choose over a broader chin. So it's your call.

We've already more or less concluded on the rest of the characters, just might need a little bit of refining here and there.

Mrs. Fettlestein
- Calvin's drawn old lady, prolly the finalized version.

Military Soldiers
- We are following Wen San's sketch, just that we might have to change the goggles to night vision goggles. >.>
- Their approach / style is following the SWAT unit.

Scientists
- Finalized and using Amir's sketch. All that needs changing is just adding the oxygen tank behind.

Little U92s will be reused from the original U92-1, cockroach finalized to Calvin's sketch, Pedestrians are, well, pedastrians.

I hope in today's discussion, we have more or less all of the character designs cleared up.



Assignments

Work on the more detailed sketch of the characters including their props and armor and so on.

Denver
- Sidearm; P90 with add on of your finishing touches.
- Primary; Rifle combined Pump Action/Auto Shotty with your finishing touches.
- Melee; Hammer with some entertaining gadgets.

U92
- Anything to do with the city sticking out of him, be it concrete, metal plates, iron bars, wires and so on.

President Jones
- He is to be with a tie in a really wicked looking suit.
- .. and a mechanical hand. =)


The rest will be discussed soon. Or today to be specific, 24/09/09, Thursday.

On a side note, we are WAY ahead on schedule. =)



Vote

Alright, I would like your opinion on this, this is going to affect our workflow and progress. But of course, whichever you pick, we will always hold a group discussion to throw in ideas and so on. It broadens the variety of what our sole mindsets are capable of.

1) Alike the character design procedure, we all go home, and sketch whatever comes to mind and present it on Spannar appointed deadline.

2) We split the workload, for example the upcoming assignments, environment design and prop design. We'll split it into 2 groups, so we can concentrate and cover more.

As for no.2, if we were to go for that route, I figured that half of us can cover the concept designs/storyboard/animatics, and the other half start working on the 3d models/rigging and stuff.

Imho, I would go with 2. It saves time and we can be more productive. Of course, this doesn't mean we are limiting you, you can still give a hand in whatever whenever. I guess it all really depends on how you are willing to juggle your work.

Project U92


As far as our progress goes, we are still at 0% for character design. Due to technical issues such as being absent, Hari Raya, and getting drunk. More info will be stated below.

As for story, we received word from Aik Sern suggesting that we "re-structure" our story to something more "focused" than having too many plots/sub-story here and there. Suggestions are welcomed, please post them in the comments.

So here are the choices we can go for :

a) Fuck it, just stick back to our original plan.
b) Re-structure / back to drawing board(from scratch).
c) Stick with original plan, but continue refining it.
d) None of the above, (state your suggestion(s) then)



Assignments

For next Saturday we are supposed to do the following :

1) Character design, 10 silhouettes each main and sub character(Excluding the Granny). And if possible, focus on one character and draw a few more rough sketches or refined versions.

2) Refining our story. Group discussion time will be informed later. To avoid anymore misunderstanding like last week, refer to blog.

3) Art Direction. We need to really research and study on this, whatever references you find, keep them. We'll need to show them to Aik Sern next week.

These are more or less the instruction given by Aik Sern today.
As for the Extra-line characters and the Granny, those can stick to 2~4 silhouettes each.

So that means,
10x3 = U92-1; The Veteran Denver; President Jones.
4x5 = Granny; Military; Scientist; Pedastrians(?); Uranium Boy(s) Jr.


This week's progress is pretty damn disappointing, you know who you are. Since this week is the second week of the term and it's Raya holiday, I guess it's pretty much okay to close an eye.
For those who couldn't make it with the appointed assignment, try to not let it happen again. Because I find it unfair to those who actually did the sketches.

If this continues I don't see the point in me wasting my time updating this blog.

Project U92

Story

Today we sort of locked down on the story, what are to be added and what are to be improvised and etc. Here is the updated break down of the story :

Act One
- No changes in Act One's introduction.
- Under conflict, Uranium Boy unleashes fury on City - pending, the others is a go.

Act Two
- Rising Action, interrogation of the old lady is under 'JJF - Just For Fun', so depending on the length of our short film, this will depend whether it'll be featured in the short film or not.
- The rest including the Climax will proceed as normal.

Act Three
- Peace returns to the city, BUT the city is still in a wreck.
- Action Hero showered by citizens will be altered into something perhaps more impactful. So, pending.
- Conclusion, will proceed as stated on your black & white.

Spannar Assignment

With the above information, I hope this gives you a picture of how the characters might look like. So get to the drawing board and, well, draw!

Research and Referencing, I've asked Wen San to bring some references that we can use tomorrow, perhaps it could shed some light when designing these characters. If you have stumbled upon a picture, or a site or anything related, feel free to post them here or bring them tomorrow.

Assigment(s) : Create silhouettes and/or sketches of the characters as how you envisioned them. From there on we can move on with choosing the most appropriate looking one. Try your best to create at least 2~3 silhouettes / sketches for each of the characters above.

That way when we round up everyone's sketches, we could end up with at least 115 sketches. : D
So, try your best, and May the Uranium be with you. =)

Deadline : This Saturday, 19/09/09.

Week 2 of 3rd Yr 2nd Term

Project : U92

Spannar Note

As we already have the spine of our story, we can proceed with developing the concept art for characters, props and environments. As we are still at the early stages, by this Saturday we should be able to come up with the following :

- Final story(In point form & draft) - Calvin is working on it atm.

*- Will need refining after Calvin is done with the above, group discussion will be held.

- Names for the characters/environments[city, town]/props[?].

- Research and Referencing[Steam Punk, Modern Era, World Collapsing, Semi-Realistic(TF2)].

- Sketches / Silhouettes of the characters.

**- If possible, environment sketches.

Opening of Spannar Website

Welcome one and all, from now onwards we, Spannar Production will be updating the blog with weekly progress of our upcoming project : Project U92.
